Land of the Rising Sun

Who will ever forget Karl Lagerfeld’s 2007 extravaganza for Fendi when he transformed the Great Wall of China into a giant catwalk. Mr Lagerfeld must have one amazing fortune-teller as just four years on, the orient is back with a contemporary vengeance. For instance, John Galliano’s grandeur of translating the evocative muse, Marie Lani (it must be fate), who posed as a French actress in the 1920s and coaxed the crème de la crème of the Parisian art scene (Matisse and Léger to name but a few) to paint portraits of her and then absconded with some 50 works, has a distinctly oriental feel. All the usual Galliano ingredients were evident in his Spring Summer RTW show, from sheer organza to tulle and embroidery, making another collection absolutely galvanising.

Another designer embracing the east is Haider Ackermann. From the sash of a silk cami to a robe spilling off a bare shoulder in vivid colours of electric blue, emerald, red and yellow, he still managed to embody sophisticated elegance without losing the ambience of pure decadence.

For your own interpretation of this trend, picture yourself in kimono- style dresses, obi belts and paper bag waists combining it with the perfect shade of red-lacquer lips.
